Research in Motion (RIM) has launched BlackBerry 10 with great pomp, at a launch event held simultaneously in many cities around the world. The manufacturer promises “a new design and new technology” for a “fresh start“. Symbolically, he adopted the name of its range of devices: BlackBerry.
RIM has long been one of the major players in the mobile market, before losing significant market share in favor of Apple but also and especially Android. Two years ago, at the trough of the wave, RIM had fallen too far behind. He could partner with a third party, as did Nokia, but chose instead to start from scratch.
The whole constitutes a new “BlackBerry Experience“, which opens a “whole new user experience” promising “better connect both people, devices, content and services“. BlackBerry 10 continues to meet the basic course of its predecessor, it remains “socially hyper-connected” and suitable for use both personally and professionally.
The platform BlackBerry 10 launches many new features. Starting with a “BlackBerry Hub” which centralizes and integrates all social communication. The email, calendar, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn are fully accessible without using the installation of dedicated applications. However keep in mind that all dedicated applications for previously mentioned serices are also available.
“BlackBerry Flow” setting on productivity. The new OS offers true multitasking: Applications are not put to sleep when they are in the background. This design allows for example, when the famous red LED warning appears notificing of the arrival of an email, simply make a gesture from the bottom of the screen upwards and to the right to display partially and temporarily the email client without interrupt the previous activity.
By micing your finders from the top of the screen down, “BlackBerry Balance” toggles between personal and professional. It is mainly the application launcher that changes, but the same application can coexist with accounts and separate security settings.
The famous “BlackBerry Messenger” offers essentially the same features, except that it receives video calling and screen sharing.
Photo, video and music
In terms of multimedia, the new credo of BlackBerry, the new OS hosts to start a whole new camera application. It offers a function “time shift”, which generates a burst and then you can select a picture for the background and possibly one for each of the faces in the picture.
In the same line, the “BlackBerry World“, which replaces the catalog of applications, hosts a rich catalog of movies and music.
BlackBerry Z10 features a “super screen” LCD of 4.2 inches with a resolution of 356 pixels per inch. So he opened a new touchpad promising the same experience with the renowned BlackBerry physical keyboard. It mainly offers a prediction function for, according to the CEO of BlackBerry, “write without typing.” It can switch from one language to another on the fly, without user intervention. A gesture to the left will also erase an entire word.
Powered by a dual core processor (Snapdragon S4) clocked 1.5GHz and accompanied by 2GB of RAM, Z10 embarks 16GB storage expandable via microSD and has a micro HDMI output and a 1800 mAh battery for a given weight of 137.5 grams. It adopts an 8 megapixel sensor, coupled with a second (2 megapixel) at front.
BlackBerry has also maintained the historical conception of the BlackBerry Q10, which has a physical keyboard plus a 3.1-inch LCD touch screen with 360 pixels per inch. The back of this model is designed in a glass. There is no information on this business model, which seems less BlackBerry bet.
Finally, the BlackBerry has understood the importance of a rich application catalog and has partnered with many publishers. The BlackBerry World hosts more then 70 000 applications since its opening, which would make it “by far” the largest catalog from launch. In particular, in 1000 the most popular applications for other platforms are available. BlackBerry can actually run Android applications. The list of apps include: Skype, Amazon Kindle, WhatsApp, SAP, Angry Birds, Where’s my Water, Gameloft, Sega, Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, LinkedIn, Rdio, SoundHound, Box.net and much more
On paper, the BlackBerry has a strong standpoint to return to the front of the stage. It only remains to determine whether the implementation of many promises holds up.
